Eat fruit
We must eat fruit! We must eat seasonal fruit! And we must eat fruit from our own country! These affirmations have been hammered home to the point where they are now accepted without question.
Light and yet filling, fruit is a protective food. Containing practically no fat or cholesterol, it plays an important role in preventing obesity. It is also involved in the fight against diabetes, thanks to its moderate carbohydrate content, against cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases, due to its micronutrients (antioxydants), and against cancer. Around 250 studies conducted over the last 30 years have demonstrated that people who regularly consume fruit and vegetables are between 1.5 and 2 times less at risk of developing cancer. In addition, fruit and veg act against osteoporosis, cataracts, high blood pressure and cerebrovascular accidents
Seasonal fruits

By the law of nature, summer is the main time for fruits. Summer fruits are best represented by berries (strawberries, raspberries, white and redcurrants, blackberries, etc.). However, these are also preceded by cherries in June and July, then plums from September. In between, apricots, peaches and nectarines reach maturity. Thirst-quenching melons are saturated with sunshine, completing the picture. Should we make a preference for one specific category or another? No, there is no one stand-out. They are all colourful and rich in energy, vitamins and minerals. Some, however, have specific qualities, like the kiwi, which is well-known for its high vitamin C content.
Any advice about consuming them? If you are looking to avoid chemicals, then choose organic products. However, from the perspective of nutritional content, an organic fruit is no more healthy than a non-organic one, and can still contain pesticide residues. It makes sense to always wash fruit, or even peel it, although fibre is to be found in the skin itself. This fibre ensures a proper passage through the intestines, as well as making the appetite regular.
Local fruits

Health is connected to both ecological and economical issues. It is important to eat fruits grown nearby, because they are harvested when they reach the point of maturity and need less packaging and transport. Regional fruit implies that which is grown relatively nearby, so the distances between producer and consumer are slight. This limits the use of pesticides and fungicides for purposes of enabling the fresh produce to travel. Nowadays, those with money tend to prefer to spend within the local economy.
