When he was 6, V.Basner began to play the violin, which became his favourite musical
instrument, and in 1949 he graduated from Leningrad music academy as a violinist.
His first compositions he created when he was 15. In 1955 V.Basner became a prize winner on
the International Composers Contest in Warsaw for The Second String Quartet. This was the
beginning of his creative activity. As a student he met D.D.Shostakovich, whose advise
helped V.Basner to establish himself as a professional composer. Soon his relationship with
the great musician grew into a deep personal friendship.
The range of V.Basners interests is exceptionally wide and manifold, both by genres and
images. 13 works for musical theatre, 3 symphonies, 2 instrumental concerts, symphonic
suites, 5 quartets, vocal cycles. This is not a complete list of his compositions of
academic genres, successfully performed both in Russia and abroad. His contribution into
soundtracks and songs is also great. More than 100 films and 300 songs became very popular,
acquiring an auditory of millions in many countries of the world.
Every time, when listening to V.Basners music, you feel contact with the world of kindness,
internal generosity, sincerity. Emotional spontaneity of it go together with a generous
manner of expession. Reacting sharp on everything, which happened in his life, V.Basner
avoided anything vain in his creative work, he found timeless themes, revealing the nobility
of mind, high moral and civil feelings, which do not alter even in the most dramatic
situations. Thats why the events of the Second World War, baring hearts to heroic deeds,
beneficence, compassion, especially often became themes of his works.
Veniamin Basner had an ability to exalt his inner thoughts to panhuman, which appeared in
his compositions, dedicated to his private losses (Forth Quartet, Violin Sonata). They are
perceived both as a confession of lonely soul and a voice of national grief. Sometimes the
composer reached this unity by adding melodies of his popular songs to large-scale works
(Second Symphony, Fifth Quartet).
V.Basner can be called the Master in high sense of this word by faultlessness of style and
bright imaginaton. It seems, he can master everything: tragic and comic, a complex
polyphonic labirinth and a sincere monophonic melody. And this all is crowned by inspired
lyrics, which is probably the most strong feature of Veniamin Basners music.
